Can You Send a Fax From Gmail?

The honest answer is no — but the fix takes about two minutes. Here's how.

Short, honest answer first: Gmail cannot send a fax. Email and fax are different networks — an email travels between mail servers, while a fax has to arrive over a phone line at a fax machine (or a fax number). No setting inside Gmail changes that, and typing a fax number into the "To" field won't work.

But if what you actually have is a document sitting in your Gmail that needs to reach someone's fax number — that's a two-minute problem to solve.

💡 The fast route: download the attachment from Gmail, upload it to an online fax service, and it arrives as a real fax — no fax machine, no new account, no subscription.

How to Fax a Document From Your Gmail

  1. Open the email containing your document, and download the attachment (on a computer, hover over it and click the download arrow; on a phone, tap the attachment, then save it)
  2. Go to LowFax.com in your browser
  3. Upload the file you just downloaded — PDF, Word document, or image all work
  4. Enter the recipient's fax number, select the destination country, and add your name and email
  5. Pay by card and send — $1.99 for up to 10 pages to the US, and a delivery confirmation lands in your inbox (yes, your Gmail) when it arrives

What About "Email-to-Fax" Services?

Some fax services do offer true email-to-fax: you send an email to a special address like 1234567890@theirservice.com and it comes out as a fax. It's a real feature — but it generally requires signing up for an account and a monthly subscription first, because the service has to know who you are to bill you. For businesses that fax constantly from their inbox, that can be worth paying for. For sending a document you happen to have in Gmail today, the download-and-upload route above gets it done in the same couple of minutes with no signup at all. (LowFax keeps things simple and doesn't offer email-to-fax — everything sends through the website.)

Google Tools Can't Fax Either — Same Trick Works

The same logic applies to Google Docs, Google Drive, and Google Photos: none of them can send a fax directly, but all of them can download (or share) a file that you then upload to a fax service. If your document lives in Google Docs, use File → Download → PDF first — PDF is the format fax services handle best.
